Many of his ceramics start with a narrative that’s either imagined, half remembered, carefully researched or commissioned.

Working on one piece at a time, every piece he creates is totally unique.“My output is low and slow”“I work with a variety of clays into which I often add other fragments of material. These ”inclusions” plus the use of oxides and multiple firings add to the alchemy and often give the clay a distressed or patinated surface.”A love of whimsy, folk art, religious and tribal art and his background as an illustrator, all go into the mix. Derek was once described as “Possibly one of the UK’s most successful illustrators. For more than forty years, with agents in London Tokyo and Toronto he created work for a raft of top International and UK clients. Won several awards and sold 13 million copies worldwide.

Summer Workshop Lino Cut with Emily Feaver

We are pleased to welcome back Emily Feaver for a morning of fun and creativity. 

Whether you’re a beginner or looking to define your skills, this workshop will guide you through the steps of the creative art of lino cutting and printing. Included in the workshop will be the fundamentals of carving using your own design, students will draw/trace their designs onto the lino, Emily will then demonstrate various approaches to cutting. Once you have created your design and cut the lino to reveal you image, Emily will then help you explore the magic of printing as you bring your artwork to life, the completed lino cut is then inked with rollers and printed by hand.

Students are asked to bring along a few ideas / sketches on paper as potential subject matter. Any images, patterns or lettering are welcome, Emily will offer guidance on what will work best in print and what is doable within the time frame – best to keep it small and simple. Emily will bring along plenty of images to inspire.

Emily currently works in oils, watercolour and linocut from her studio-hut near Alton, Hampshire.

Previous work includes illustrations for Carol Ann Duffy’s  “The Good Child’s Guide To Rock ‘n’ Roll” Faber & Faber (2003), linocut designs for The British Council Venice Biennale Pavilion (1995-2000) and her own limited edition linocut  Alphabet Frieze (2005).  She has produced linocut commissions for MakerMaker in Exeter and an award winning Artisan garden at the Chelsea Flower Show (2014).

More recently she illustrated ‘London on Sea’ – a guide to days out on the south coast, published by Ebury Press (Penguin) 2018.

 Her oil paintings have been exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery (1992) ,     Sally Hunter Fine Art (1993), The New Grafton Gallery (1996), Peralta Pictures, London (1997, 1998) and The New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham (2011) and can be found in private collections in the UK, U.S.A. and Australia.
